"Cardboard Castle" is a tragic romance novel set in an English Manor House. A young man is invited to serve as a tutor to Anthony Calderton, a spoilt young boy when his parents Captain and Lady Calderton are away on business. The tutor settles down to work and begin to win the boy over. But a mysterious man, Captain Bertie-Norton, soon shows up in the neighbourhood seeking to befriend both Anthony and his tutor, even wishing to be invited to stay at the manor. And when Lady Calderton returns home, and hears about him, she is shocked.
