This is an adventure novel written by Frederick Marryat. The story is set after the Revolution of 1830 swept through France, when Charles X was deposed from the throne and forced into exile. Among the many noble families affected by the upheaval was the narrator's own. His father, a loyal supporter of the deposed monarch, abandoned his homeland and set off on a journey of exile with Charles X, taking the young narrator with him. Together they traveled to distant lands, from Scotland to Egypt, in search of solace and distraction. But for the father, there was no escape from the heartache of exile.
