"Unforgotten Years" is the autobiography of the 19th century American-born British essayist and critic, Logan Pearsall Smith. Harvard and Oxford educated, his writing style is known for its aphorisms and epigrams, and he was an expert on 17th Century divines. His famed novel 'Words and Idioms' made him an authority on correct English language usage. He begins his life's story with a brief history of his ancestry. The Smith family had originally been from Yorkshire before moving to the American colonies. Many had become quite affluent including his grandfather who set up a successful business venture in glass manufacturing. Smith also speaks of his religious childhood including his family's departure from the Quaker tradition of his ancestors, his education at both Harvard and Oxford Universities, and his entry into the literary world.
